Visual Communications + Information Systems Specialist – NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region

Position Overview:

CASE is seeking a highly skilled Visual Communications & Information Systems Specialist to support the Communications and External Affairs (CEA) Branch of NOAA Fisheries’ West Coast Region (WCR). This position blends visual design, information management, and science communication—transforming complex marine science and policy concepts into compelling, accessible products for diverse audiences.

You will collaborate with NOAA Fisheries’ communicators, scientists, and managers to design and produce high-quality visual materials, manage photo and graphic archives, coordinate printing services, and support both internal and external web content. This role is ideal for a creative professional with a passion for conservation storytelling and the technical expertise to ensure every product meets NOAA’s branding, accessibility, and scientific accuracy standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design impactful visual products—including infographics, brochures, reports, fact sheets, posters, signage, StoryMaps, and data visualizations—that make complex science clear and engaging.

  • Collaborate with NOAA experts to scope, develop, and finalize products that meet communications goals and comply with NOAA Branding Guidelines and Section 508 accessibility requirements.

  • Manage a well-organized photo and graphics archive, ensuring imagery is searchable, properly tagged with metadata, and readily available for outreach.

  • Serve as liaison to the Government Publishing Office for printing services, advising on paper, ink, dimensions, and other specifications to ensure high-quality, cost-effective results.

  • Provide backup support for internal and external web content using Drupal and Google Sites.

  • Maintain organized design project files with clear version control and retrieval processes.

  • Track and maintain the communications team’s equipment inventory (cameras, microphones, tablets, etc.).

  • Support NOAA Fisheries’ coordinated communications efforts through regular virtual and occasional in-person meetings.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years’ experience creating visual communications products for scientific or natural resource management topics.

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva.

  • Proven ability to translate complex science into clear, engaging visual narratives for public audiences.

  • Experience managing large-scale digital photo archives.

  • Skilled in Drupal and Google Sites web content management.

  • Experience coordinating and processing large print orders.

  • Knowledge of Section 508 compliance for documents and web content.

  • Experience working with marine, fisheries, or environmental science programs preferred.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace tools.
