Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)/Industrial Hygienist Support – Fisheries Laboratory Operations

Overview:

CASE Consultants International is seeking a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or experienced Industrial Hygienist (IH) to support environmental health and safety operations at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) Montlake Laboratory in Seattle, WA.

This role supports a dynamic, mission-driven research environment focused on fisheries science, marine ecosystems, and laboratory-based research. The selected candidate will help ensure safe, compliant, and effective laboratory operations by evaluating exposure risks, supporting safety programs, and contributing to regulatory-aligned documentation and reporting.

This position may be supported by a broader team, including IH technicians and/or additional safety professionals, depending on final contract structure. 

Key Responsibilities include:

Exposure Assessment & Monitoring

  • Evaluate potential chemical, biological, and physical hazards associated with laboratory and field operations

  • Conduct or support exposure monitoring related to air quality, ventilation effectiveness, noise, and temperature

  • Assess risks associated with specimen handling, preservatives, solvents, and necropsy-related activities  

Laboratory Safety & Hazard Controls

  • Assess safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and biological samples

  • Recommend and support implementation of engineering and administrative controls (e.g., ventilation improvements, workflow modifications)

  • Support integration of safety practices into day-to-day lab operations

Ventilation + Indoor Air Quality

  • Evaluate laboratory ventilation systems including fume hoods and general airflow

  • Provide recommendations to ensure safe and compliant working environments  

Safety Program Support + Compliance

  • Develop, review, and update SOPs, Chemical Hygiene Plans, and safety protocols

  • Support lab inspections, audits, and corrective action tracking and closure

  • Coordinate with Government safety personnel to ensure compliance with applicable standards

Technical Documentation + Reporting

  • Support development of technical reports comparing exposure results to regulatory and consensus standards

  • Contribute to data analysis, documentation, and QA/QC processes aligned with Federal frameworks (e.g., NOAA, EPA)  

  • Ensure deliverables are traceable, defensible, and clearly communicated

Control Strategy Development

  • Recommend and help implement mitigation strategies where conditions do not meet requirements

  • Support development of hazard mitigation plans and field safety protocols

  • Track and document corrective actions through resolution

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health, or related field

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in laboratory, research, or industrial settings

  • Demonstrated experience with:

    • Exposure assessment and hazard evaluation

    • Laboratory safety programs and compliance frameworks

    • Technical documentation and reporting

  • Strong understanding of OSHA, EPA, and occupational health standards

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a scientific research environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) (preferred)

  • Experience supporting federal laboratories or marine/fisheries research environments

  • Experience with:

    • Negative Exposure Assessments (NEAs) or similar regulatory analyses

    • Ventilation system evaluation and design

    • ISO 9001-aligned QA/QC processes

  • Familiarity with NOAA or EPA regulatory frameworks

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily on-site at the NWFSC Montlake Laboratory in Seattle, WA

  • May involve exposure to laboratory environments, including biological samples and chemical agents

  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams including scientists, lab staff, and safety personnel
